Gregor Watt

Gregor began his career in financial services in 1988. He spent his first 13 years working for Friends Provident before Allied Dunbar as a consultant to the Independent Adviser sector, providing product and technical assistance to IFAs.

In 2001, he became an adviser and now works advising clients predominantly in Investment and Retirement Planning, both prior to and post retirement.

He has been with HJP since 2005, during which time he has continued to enhance his knowledge.

He is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Personal Finance Society. In 2011 he completed his Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning and, as a result, now holds Chartered Financial Planner status. Since then he has gone on to become a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society and has recently become an affiliate member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners.

He became a Director of HJP in 2011, taking on the role of Managing Director with effect from March 2017.

Gregor currently lives in Caterham with his wife and 3 boys. His main hobbies include trying to encourage his children to follow his love of good food, rugby, Shakespeare and all things French.

What is a typical day like? 

Long!

What attracted you to work in this industry? 

The fact that every day and every client is different.

How do you think you add value for your clients? 

Sometimes it’s reorganising their finances to produce a better outcome, sometimes it means preventing them from making a financial mistake. Often it is getting them to think outside the box.

What motivates you to work hard? 

I want to hand this business on to my successor stronger and better than when I took it on. 

How long have you been doing this job? 

Since Adam was a boy!

What’s the best thing about your job? 

Changing people’s futures and seeing our people develop and grow.

What has been your key accomplishment in your career so far? 

Achieving Chartership and becoming MD.

What are your interests outside of work? 

Food, wine and rugby

What does your ideal day off look like? 

Lie-in, activity with the kids then a long lunch with friends.
